Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) was born in rural Kentucky, on 3 June 1808. He grew up as a home schooled youth until his attendance to Transylvania University (Kentucky). There he resided until 1824, until President Monroe assigned him to the West Point Military Academy. He was often praised by his fellow cadets, and went on to fight in the frontier service and the Blackhawk War. Later he was transferred to the First Dragoons in 1833. He soon retired in 1835, to marry his love. He settled down in Vicksburg, Mississippi, becoming a cotton planter. By 1844 he had become a popular man in politics, renowned for his speaking ability. In 1845 he was elected to congress, later retiring the next year. He returned to the army, leading a regiment against the borders. He was wounded at Buena Vista, once again retiring. He once again took part in political positions. Later, after the formation of the Confederacy, Davis almost unanimously elected to the Presidency. After the fall of the Confederate army, he was taken prisoner. On release he visited Richmond, VA. After staying mostly quiet, he died on 5 December 1889. |
