Sam Houston was born on March 2nd, 1793 near Lexington, Virginia. He spent most of his childhood with his mother, who was a widow. He eventually lived with the Cherokee natives, with who he developed close ties with. At the ripe age of 19 he fought under Andrew Jackson a.k.a. Old Hickory in the War of 1812. In 1814 he was made lieutenant of Andrew Jackson’s portion of the army. After Texas gained their independence (Which Sam played a huge role in) Sam was elected Major General of the Texan Army. He held that position from 1836-44. He married Margaret Lea in 1840. Margaret helped Sam with his drinking problem because he was a formal figure. He died in his house on July 26th, 1863 at 6: 15 PM. “Texas will again lift it's head and stand among the nations. It ought to do so, for no country upon the globe can compare with it in natural advantages"
