School Spotlight
St. Joseph Middle School

As students enter early adolescence, they are faced with many new opportunities and challenges. We help our families make the most of these formative years. We exist to help bring young adolescents to Christ and help develop their faith into a lived reality while providing them with a strong academic background. Through a faith-integrated curriculum, fine arts, co-curricular activities, campus ministry, developmental guidance, service programs, social events, and the Christian witness provided by our staff, students come to know Christ better and grow in faith. As students begin to develop adult values, our school helps them to make a positive connection with the Church.

We are a unique school -- uniquely Catholic, and uniquely a middle school (grades 6-8). We are not an elementary school or a mini-high school. Our middle school has been established with the needs of the early adolescent in mind. Our advisor/advisee program and caring staff help provide students with the personal attention they need. The "departmental pod" structure facilitates a close connection between the students and teachers on each grade level while providing the subject specialists needed to address the depth and breadth of the curriculum. We are committed to a holistic middle school education that meets the intellectual, physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the early adolescent.

Strong instruction results in high academic achievement. On the Iowa Test of Basic Skills the average score for our students was the 82nd percentile (meaning that they scored as well or better than 82% of students nationally.) On the Terra Nova, students at SJMS outscored national averages by 30 points.

Special Programs

Co-curricular programs challenge students to use their talents and make new friends. St. Joseph Middle School supports nine FIRST Lego League teams, the largest number of teams from one school in the State. FIRST Lego League is applied technology, problem solving and teamwork in a competitive venue. Forensics involves 50-70 students competing in solo monologues, plays, group interpretation, prose, poetry reading and more. The annual musical, written by the students, features a cast and crew of 175. Other co-curricular activities include Art Club, Chess Club, Computer Club, Liturgy Choir, Mediators and Mentors, Scrabble Club, Ski Club, Student Council, Tech Team, Yearbook and more.

The athletic programs at SJMS follow a “no cut” policy. We form as many teams as needed to provide the best quality athletic program for the greatest number of students. Sports include football (flag and tackle), volleyball, cross-country, basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, track, and softball.
